A Netezza Thanksgiving: Let's all do what works

November 22, 2011

Thanksgiving is upon us, always a good time for some reflection. I'm particularly grateful for all the talented individuals I've had the honor to work with at Netezza. We've lived through exciting and challenging times together and I've learned something of value from each and every one of you. It's been a time of change for Netezza as we integrate with IBM.  Teams are changing and people are moving to other areas of the company to take advantage of the unique synergies that working for an innovation giant like IBM offers us.  As we move ahead to 2012 and new challenges and opportunities, I think it's wise to take stock of where we are, where we are going, and how best to get there. Here's what I think makes sense for all of us in the coming months and years.

  1. Play to your strengths. Netezza is brimming with talent. Each member of the Netezza team has something unique and very valuable to offer.  Too often when big changes occur, we get stuck on what we view as our shortcomings rather than being grateful for our unique skills and talents.  Whether it's working collaboratively with others, coming up with creative solutions to tough problems, or keeping things on track, you know what you're good at.  Hold onto that. Think about how your colleagues may best benefit from your special talents and work to make that happen every day.
  1. Know your elevator pitch. Know clearly in your mind what you do and what you offer, and be able to explain it in clear and concise terms. This will help others know what you bring to the company and help you focus on your special strengths you bring to the organization as a whole.
  1. Be open to new ways of thinking.  By being receptive to new ideas and taking advantage of the training and educational opportunities that IBM offers, you will expand your network at the company and  broaden your horizons.  This is not an eat or be eaten culture; far from it. Your colleagues at IBM are here to help you.
  1. Focus on your work and doing a good job every day. The expectation is that you will contribute to the company. Innovation is key. Continuously strive for new and better ways of doing things. Good work will get noticed.
  1. Be authentic. Care about the people you work with and the greater good, and everyone will benefit.
  1. Communicate constructively. Eight out of ten people might say no to your idea. Keep your mojo for the two who say yes.
  1. You don't know it all. To achieve excellence we all have to rely on others. Don't try to go it alone, but do be responsible for the energy you bring into the room. The way you are feeling and presenting yourself will impact others. Do your part to help everybody lift up.

Despite the challenges we might face, there are enormous opportunities in front of us all and a lot to be grateful for.  Happy Thanksgiving.
